Video: Bong Alvarez attacks lady repoter

Cebu Daily News
Manila, Philippines — Former basketball player Paul “Bong” Alvarez found himself in the middle of a different ball game after he was slapped with charges of physical injuries by two people who accused him of attacking them in Mandaluyong City on Tuesday.

One of his victims, however, ABS-CBN television reporter Gretchen Malalad, punched Alvarez in the face after he allegedly elbowed her and grabbed her by the hair when she tried to interview him.

Malalad, who holds a black belt in karate, won gold medals in the Southeast Asian Games.

Alvarez’ other victim, Wilfredo Cabanlit, 46, a taxi driver, was not as fortunate.
He had a huge bump between the eyes aside from bruises and cuts on his face when he went to the police.

The charges against Alvarez were filed in the Mandaluyong prosecutor’s office.

Police Officer 2 Edmundo Fabela said Alvarez flagged down Cabanlit’s taxi in a hotel in Quezon City about 5 a.m.

Cabanlit said Alvarez, who smelled of liquor, angrily accused him of trying to jack up his taxi fare by taking Boni Avenue, the longer route, instead of Shaw Boulevard, on his way to Quiapo, Manila.

When Cabanlit said he was only avoiding the traffic, Alvarez kicked him, the police report said.

As Cabanlit got out of his cab to avoid the suspect’s blows, Alvarez ran after him, hitting him in the face and chest, at times with a beer bottle, the victim said.

Witnesses took Alvarez and the driver to the police station where Malalad tried to interview Alvarez who refused.

When she approached Cabanlit, Alvarez elbowed her in the face and pulled her hair, prompting her to punch his face.

Alvarez and his lawyer, Godfrey Camaligan, refused to talk to the media about the incident.

Alvarez later posted a bail bond of P4,500 and was released from police custody at 4 p.m. /Inquirer
