Students must memorize Philippine anthem

The Department of Education (DepEd) is directing all school officials to ensure that students memorize and know the proper way of singing the country’s national anthem. The DepEd does not want a repeat of the embarrassing moment of a famous singer who forgot the lyrics of Lupang Hinirang late last year.

“Dapat alam ang pambansang awit. ‘Yun ngang mga foreigners kahit naka tape kinakanta pa rin nila ang pambansang awit nila,” the DepEd said.

“We want to make sure na lang na ang mga estudyante ay alam ang lyrics at ang tamang pagkanta ng Lupang Hinirang,” the DepEd stressed lamenting that “tayong mga Pinoy kasi, may tendency na maging tamad na kantahin.”

It will be recalled that singer Christian Bautista was chided by media and local officials after he forgot the lyrics of the national anthem when he sang it in an exhibition boxing event featuring boxing champ Jerry Peñalosa.

Baustista asked the public’s apology acknowledging his mistake and vowed to memorize the lyrics `Lupang Hinirang’ so as not to repeat his blunder.

Under DepEd order No, 83 of 2007, it was mandated that during flag raising and retreat ceremonies, there should be actual singing of the national anthem and not by canned music.

Likewise, the order stipulates that no tattered or badly-faded flag should be displayed or hoisted in the flag pole of any school or office.

The DepEd has “directed school officials to observe the provisions of Republic Act 8491, providing the rules and guidelines on the proper display and use of the Philippine flag, as well as on the singing of the national anthem and the prohibited acts on its use. It’s about time we get reminded of our patriotic duty to renew efforts to respect and pledge allegiance to this icon of a nation that is truly free.”

  2. “Bayan Ko”
    Ang bayan kong Pilipinas
    Lupain ng ginto at bulaklak
    Pag-ibig ang sa kanyang palad
    Nag-alay ng ganda at dilag.
At sa kanyang yumi at ganda
    Dayuhan ay nahalina
    Bayan ko, binihag ka
    Nasadlak sa dusa.

    Ibon mang may layang lumipad
    Kulungin mo at umiiyak
    Bayan pa kayang sakdal dilag
    Ang di magnasang makaalpas!
    Pilipinas kong minumutya
    Pugad ng luha ko’t dalita
    Aking adhika,
    Makita kang sakdal laya!

  3. “The Impossible Dream”
    To dream the impossible dream
    To fight the unbeatable foe
    To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

    To right the unrightable wrong
(1)To be better far than you are(1)
To try when your arms are too weary
    To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest, to follow that star
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
(2)To be willing to give when there’s no more to give (2)
(3)To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live (3)
And I know if I’ll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I’m laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
    To reach the unreachable star

Ngayon ganap ang hirap sa mundo
    Unawa ang kailangan ng tao
    Ang pagmamahal sa kapwa’y ilaan
Isa lang ang ugat ng ating pinagmulan

    Tayong lahat ay magkalahi
Sa unos at agos ay huwag padadala
Panahon na (may pagasa kang matatanaw)
Ng pagkakaisa (bagong umaga, bagong araw)
Kahit ito (sa atin Siya”y nagmamahal)

    Ay hirap at dusa
    Magkaisa (May pagasa kang matatanaw)
At magsama (bagong umaga, bagong araw)
Kapit kamay (sa atin Siya”y nagmamahal)

    Sa bagong pagasa
    Ngayon may pag-asang natatanaw
    May bagong araw, bagong umaga
Pagmamahal sa Diyos, isipin mo tuwina

  12. “Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo”

‘Di na ‘ko papayag mawala ka muli.
‘Di na ‘ko papayag na muli mabawi,
Ating kalayaan kay tagal natin mithi.
    ‘Di na papayagang mabawi muli.
    Magkakapit-bisig libo-libong tao.
    Kay sarap palang maging Pilipino.
    Sama-sama iisa ang adhikain.
    Kelan man ‘di na paalipin.
    Handog ng Pilipino sa mundo,
    Mapayapang paraang pagbabago.
    Katotohanan, kalayaan, katarungan
Ay kayang makamit na walang dahas.
    Basta’t magkaisa tayong lahat.
Masdan ang nagaganap sa aming bayan.
    Nagkasama ng mahirap at mayaman.
    Kapit-bisig madre, pari, at sundalo.
Naging Langit itong bahagi ng mundo.
Huwag muling payagang umiral ang dilim.
Tinig ng bawat tao’y bigyan ng pansin.
    Magkakapatid lahat sa Panginoon.
    Ito’y lagi nating tatandaan.
