Cebuana teacher wins award in US

IN Clinton High in North Carolina, American students are learning about Cebuano culture and way of life, and are raving about Cebu’s beaches, the Sinulog, otap, dried mangoes and danggit. Students, who have never heard of the Philippines, much less about Cebu, even learned to use the Philippine currency and other Philippine-made materials in their Math and science classes. (more…)

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Although Manny Pacquiao is the new 135-pound champion, he’s no mere lightweight. At any weight, in any ring, the Filipino phenomenon looks like the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Packing five new pounds of power in his usual stunning hand speed, Pacquiao captured a title belt in his fourth weight class Saturday night, stopping David Diaz in the ninth round to claim the WBC lightweight championship at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Loren denies grandstanding in Drilon’s release

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Loren Legarda on Monday denied that she was grand-standing when she worked for the release from captivity of broadcast journalist Ces Drilon and two others in Sulu province last week. This, as she challenged those who are questioning her participation in the release of Drilon, cameraman Jimmy Encarnacion, and Prof. Octavio Dinampo to come out in the open and bring their criticisms to the public. More ferry survivors found in Philippines

CEBU, Philippines (Reuters) – Twenty-eight passengers from a capsized passenger ferry were reported alive in the central Philippines on Monday but more than 800 remain missing after the ship sank during a typhoon.

The survivors made it to a small coastal village after drifting at sea for more than 24 hours in a rubber boat, radio dzBB reported. Two others originally on board the life raft drowned in large swells. (more…)

Death empowers Filipinos in Canada

May 24 this year marks the fourth anniversary of the death in Toronto of a Filipino-Canadian, Jeffrey Reodica, then a 17-year-old honor student at Scarborough’s Jean Vanier Catholic School. At close range he was shot in the back by a Toronto policeman who was in plainclothes and who would later claim self-defense because Jeffrey “had a knife” with him. (more…)
