Makati siege part of ‘serious’ destabilization plot

Government security forces assaulted the Manila hotel where a band of renegade soldiers were demanding President Gloria Arroyo (C) step down. Authorities launched a manhunt Friday for more suspects accused of helping stage a dramatic but short-lived rebellion against the government(AFP/PCPO)

Officials revealed Friday that the six-hour standoff in Makati City was part of a bigger plot to destabilize the government. (more…)

Soldiers walk out of trial in Manila, take over hotel

Around a dozen uniformed Philippine soldiers on trial for a failed 2003 mutiny walked out of a courthouse on Thursday and set up camp in a luxury hotel, calling for the overthrow of the government.

There was no violence but the soldiers included a senator who led an attempt to overthrow President Arroyo in 2003 and they were joined by former vice-president Teofisto Guingona. (more…)

Moderate Quake Shakes the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A moderate earthquake shook the Philippines’ main island of Luzon on Tuesday. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Buildings across Manila shook for several seconds. Panicked residents ran out into the streets, including some staffers at the Malacanang presidential palace and workers in the capital’s Makati financial district. (more…)

50 years of Israel-Philippines relations

Israel’s national flag is displayed beside Philippines’ national flag on the shore of the Dead Sea November 25, 2007. The two flags, both 100 meters-long (328 feet) and 200 meters wide (656 feet), were displayed together on Sunday to mark 50 years of relations between the two countries, a spokesperson at the Israeli Tourism Ministry said. ‘Mina’ weakens slightly, still heading towards Northern Luzon
